WICHITA, Kan. - A federal prosecutor has accused a member of an alleged drug ring of selling drugs to players on the University of Kansas basketball team.
Jim Cross, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Wichita, Kan., confirmed that a prosecutor asserted that defendant Samuel Villeareal III sold marijuana to members of the team from the 2010 and 2011 season during a June 18 hearing.
Villeareal is one of 25 people accused of being part of a massive drug ring based out of Olathe, Kan. A four-year investigation led to the more than two dozen arrests last month.
Those involved are accused of intending to distribute more than 2,200 pounds of marijuana in Johnson and Douglas Counties.
Jim Marchiony, associate athletics director for KU, said university officials knew nothing about the allegations until Friday and declined to comment until they learned more.
