PLATTE COUNTY, Mo. - Criminal charges in a sport are very rare.
On Tuesday, Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd filed assault charges against 17-year-old Colin Byrd.
Court records show Byrd ripped off the helmet if 17-year-old Jake Rosebaugh of Winnetonka and struck him over the head with it.
Rosebaugh suffered a severe concussion that prevented him from returning to school
Defense attorney and former prosecutor Dan Ross said prosecuting this case will be very difficult and turns into a slippery slope.
"That is the slippery slope you are going down. Every time you have a boxing match and a person hits below the belt, or a hockey game or soccer game and there is an injury that is improper under the sports rules... where do you draw the line?" Ross said.
Byrd is due in court January 7th. He could face probation or up to a year in Platte County Jail.
