Smash & grab theft caught on camera

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Seventeen seconds is all it took for one burglar to break into a business and take $1,200 worth of equipment. Luckily, the store owner's camera caught video of the suspect in the act.

David Blatt owns Computer Corner in Independence. This past Sunday, he had eight security cameras rolling when a suspect broke in.

His cameras captured just about every angle of the theft, including the suspect's vehicle pulling up to the business.
A short time later, you see the suspect throwing a rock through the window, then coming inside. Once inside, the suspect quickly grabbed some items in sight and in less than 20 seconds, headed back outside.

They even took Blatt's credit card machine.

"Right now I'm doing things with paper and pencil and a cash drawer," he said.

Now, Blatt is in the process of putting up bars in the windows to prevent any more thefts. He said he is still concerned that now robbers will try to come inside during daytime hours instead.

"These guys are desperate and they really don't care," Blatt said. "When there's (sic) signs on your building that say ‘You're on camera,' and ADT signs on your building that there's an alarm and they still break your window, that shows how desperate they are."

If you have any information regarding the incident, you're encouraged to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
