Sonya N. Perry charged in death of 3-month-old Stephon McCoy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A 30-year-old woman has been charged in the death of a 3-month-old Grandview boy she was caring for.

Sonya Nerissa Perry was charged in Jackson County court with second-degree murder, abuse of a child and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

The victim, Stephon McCoy, was taken to a hospital on Jan. 14 after Perry and her boyfriend called police when he wasn't breathing. He died three days later at Children's Mercy Hospital.

According to court documents, Perry said she and her boyfriend, who is Stephon's uncle, picked the boy up on Sunday, Jan. 13 at about 11 a.m.

Perry told police the night Stephon was taken to the hospital that he he had been ill all day Sunday and Monday, though her story didn't match that of her boyfriend's.

A doctor at Children's Mercy Hospital told investigators Stephon had multiple injuries consistent with being shaken including extensive brain damage, internal bleeding and bruises on several parts of his body.

Stephon's mother, Ashley Johnson, still can't understand why this happened to her son.

"I don't understand how that could happen to him. How could you beat him like that?" she said.

On Monday, Jan. 16, during another interview with investigators, Perry admitted she had put Stephon down hard on the couch and "lightly shaken" him as she was asking him what was wrong with him.

Johnson doesn't believe that story either.

"You just sat there intentionally and you did this to him," she said. "What was your reason? He couldn't fight back. All he could do was cry."

Perry and her boyfriend both told police she was Stephon's sole caretaker during the two days he was with her, according to court records.
