Fort Osage officials warn parents of police impersonator

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Independence Police Department notified Fort Osage school officials Thursday afternoon that a man posing as a police officer approached children at a bus stop.

School officials said the man talked to children, but did not try to abduct a child. The district then sent a note to families at bus stops in the area to notify them of the incident.

The note is similar to a note the district sends to all parents in the spring to remind families when kids are at the bus stop, or outside playing to be aware of their surroundings, strangers, appropriate behavior and staying safe.

Notes were sent to families in the Hawthorne area, near 24 Highway and 291.

Students in the area attend Elm Grove Elementary, Fire Prairie Upper Elementary, Osage Trail Middle School and Fort Osage High School.

The area also includes students who may attend Randall Elementary in the Independence School District.

Police have not yet given 41 Action News a description of the man, and no other details have been released.
