Three dead, one critical after shooting during Independence home invasion

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - A mother, her son and her boyfriend were shot to death early Friday during a home invasion in Independence, Mo., according to police. A fourth person remains in critical condition.

The home invasion happened around 4:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of S. Pope.

The deceased have been identified as Maria Hernandez, 48; her son Antonio Hernandez, 20; and her boyfriend Thomas Madrigal, age unknown. Police have not released a name, age or sex of the fourth victim.

Captain John Cato with the Independence Police Department said the victims and the killers knew one another.

"It would appear right now, that the motive for this invasion was robbery. It also appears that the victim and suspects were probably known to one another. It's not just a random home invasion," Cato said.

Neighbors said at least six people – including several children age 12 and under – live inside the home.

Claudette Henson lives around the corner from the Hernandez home. Henson said her kids often played with the Hernandez children, who she described as "sweet."

"I don't think that there's anything in the world that is valuable enough to want to take from another person, to kill them over," said Henson. "It's heart wrenching."

Two suspects were seen running away from the scene, according to Independence Police.

The only suspect description provided by police was one person was wearing all black and the second was wearing all red.

Investigators said a 15-year-old girl woke up to gunshots and ran to a neighbor's house to call 911.
