Suspected highway shooter appears for brief court hearing

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Highway shooting suspect Mohammed Whitaker was out of handcuffs as he appeared in court Thursday.
The 27-year-old faces 18 felony charges, which include shooting seven cars and two people.

The hearing lasted less than five minutes and Whitaker came in wearing a blue blazer, khakis and a tie.

Inmates have the option to dress in civilian clothes when there is a media camera inside the courtroom.

Whitaker didn't say a word to the judge and only looked back once to the crowd.

The state attorney asked for a continuance which was agreed to by Whitaker's attorney, Joshua Peter.

Whitaker's next appearance has been set for May 19 at 10 a.m.

His father Edward Whitaker plans to travel from Illinois to see his son. He said he's still shocked by the charges.

"I'm hoping that he gets out of all this but I don't have no idea (sic) what's going to happen," he said.

Whitaker remains at the Jackson County courthouse.  His bond has been set at $1 million.
