KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Around 1 a.m. Sunday, Brittney Vail and her family were enjoying a cook-out in their yard near 8th and Lafayette in Kansas City, Kan.
All of a sudden, Vail said they heard fighting and gunfire across the street.
"There was probably about 20 shots. It was just in a row, bang, bang, bang," Vail said.
Vail rushed her kids inside, and locked the doors behind her.
"There were probably about five guys. They were all dressed the same. They all had white t-shirts and black pants on. They just sped off quick," Vail said.
Kansas City, Kan. Police said Vail had witnessed a homicide.
They said a man in his 20s was shot many times while he was seated in his car.
KCK Police said after the victim was shot, he drove off.
They said he only made if a few blocks away, before he died, and crashed the car.
"I just can't believe that it was just right down the street from my house," Vail said.
This is the second shooting within a block of Vail's home in the past week-and-a-half.
On January 11, two men in their 20s were shot near 7th and Lafayette.
The shooting happened around 2:45 p.m. in the middle of the street.
Both men survived.
Vail said she has had enough, and hopes to leave the neighborhood soon.
"It's just scary. I got kids, and I want to move so badly, and I'm trying to get the money so I can," Vail said.
The victim's name has not been released by police.
No arrests have been made.
