KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City elementary school students got a taste of college on Friday.
Six-hundred 6th grade students visited UMKC and the Metropolitan Community College- Penn Valley as part of the Kids 2 College program which started back in February.
The goal of the program is to teach children about their education options, get them excited about their futures and give them some valuable lessons to take home.
One student we talked to was already feeling optimistic.
“During your lifetime, yes, there are going to be some difficulties, but you will learn how to adapt to them and how to overcome them,” Felipe Padilla said.
This is the Kids 2 College’s first year in Kansas City. Organizers said it’s the only free national program of its kind. It is built around the idea that students are more likely to attend college if they are taught at the middle level to link careers, future earnings and higher education.
