Kansas City Public Schools denied provisional accreditation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Education announced on Thursday they will not recommend Kansas City Public Schools regain provisional accreditation.

The board cited concerns for "many students still struggling," in a statement released Wednesday.

The state says while data shows progress, less than 30 percent of students are proficient in math and science.

Almost 70 percent are not proficient in language arts and math.

Superintendent Dr. Green traveled to Jefferson City last week to lobby for the district's reaccreditation.

The commissioner of education says while she's pleased to see the progress in the district, the state must act in its best interest of the children. She says the department will continue to work with the district.

The school district became unaccredited in 2012.

41 Action News is working to get reaction from the district.
