The Kansas City Public School district is hosting a series of enrollment fairs this week to welcome new families into the district. Today's fair is being held at the Board of Education building at 2901 Troost Ave.

The director of enrollment, Garrett Webster says they are projected to stay on pace with last year's numbers when it comes to students in the classroom.

"Everyone wants to increase the number of families that they serve, but we're focused on how do we make our services better. How do we make our schools better," said Garrett.

The district has seen a steady decline in enrollment since the inception of charter schools in the 1999-2000 school year.

According to the budget, school leaders expect a slight decrease in enrollment for the upcoming school year.

The student population in September of 2016 was 14,164 in grades K through 12.

It's expected to drop to 14,007 for the 2017-2018 school year.

District leaders hope to exceed these conservative projections, through the enrollment fair and the upcoming SummerFest.

"SummerFest is a big old family event. We want people to come and get ready for school. We'll have free backpacks, supplies. A lot of stuff for the students." said Webster.

The enrollment and transportation deadline for students is Saturday, July 22.
