Kush Sharma wins memorable Jackson County Spelling Bee

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - He is the very definition of a spelling bee champion.

After 95 rounds, seventh grader Kush Sharma won an epic spelling bee battle on Saturday during the Jackson County Spelling Bee.

The Frontier School Innovation student took the crown with the word definition, defeating Highland Park fifth-grader Sophia Hoffman for the title.

Hoffman missed on the word “stifling,” after apparently mishearing the pronunciation.  An appeal was unsuccessful.

Sharma said it was difficult to see a friend lose. “In the last two weeks, we have become really good friends,” Sharma said of Hoffman. “I sort of was getting pretty sad when she got that word incorrect.”

Sharma will now head to Washington, D.C. where he will join more than 280 other qualifiers in the 2014 Scripps National Bee.

His plan? “Just keep on studying every single minute that I have that is free,” he said. “It will be a lot less sleep that’s for sure.
