KANSAS CITY, Kan. - In recent years, families have struggled to pay off college debts in the struggling economy. One program Kansas students are utilizing is the Learning Quest 529 Education Savings Plan.
Each year, the program gives middle school students a chance to win money through an essay contest with American Century Investments.
Kansas State Treasurer Ron Estes stopped by 41 Action News to discuss the program along with Eden Kurr and Ally Koehler. Both students are runner-ups in the program's 11th Annual Back-to-School Essay Contest. They were asked to write an essay about their goals after high school and explain how they're taking steps to reach that goal. They each won $500 for their college savings.
