OLATHE, Kan. - An Olathe educator is being recognized for going above and beyond her job.
Kathy Van Nuland is a para educator at California Trail Middle School. For the past three years, she has worked with Emmett, a student with autism.
Emmett’s parents are overwhelmed with her dedication. Van Nuland has went to their son’s track meets and even made him a scrapbook to commemorate his progress.
“I wanted him to have a lot of confidence going into high school,” she said. “I wanted his parents to be able to see all the activities he’s participated in and the teachers that have formed relationships with him.”
Unfortunately, Van Nuland will not go onto high school with Emmett, but she’s confidence their time together has given the teen the tools he needs to reach his potential.
