Olathe speller supreme Vanya Shivashankar makes it to 2013 Scripps Spelling Bee finals; gets 5th

WASHINGTON - Vanya Shivashankar finished the Scripps National Spelling Bee tied for 5th place after misspelling the word 'zenaida.' She made the final 11 after spelling six words correctly in preliminary rounds and taking multiple vocabulary tests.

The on-stage spelling scores from today's competition were combined with the scores from yesterday's Semifinals computer test to determine the finalists.

At the end of the on-stage spelling rounds, 18 spellers remained. Of those, 11 are advancing to the Championships.

  •     Grace Remmer (Speller 39)
  •     Nikitha Chandran (Speller 44)
  •     Vismaya J. Kharkar (Speller 56)
  •     Syamantak Payra (Speller 242)

Shivashankar, and three-time Bee veteran, is a sixth grade student at California Trail Middle School in Olathe. She made it through spelling the words bilboquet and Michelangelesque Thursday. Her sister Kavya won the national Bee in 2009.
