UMKC is ahead of the cancer-fighting curve. A medical article published Tuesday highlights the advantage of a 3-D mammogram over a standard mammogram.
The newer procedure is already done at UMKC, unlike many other hospitals around the U.S. The procedures are nearly identical but doctors say the D-D option gives them an advantage.
“It’s kind of like a cat scan for the breast where you actually see slice by slice. That improves the sensitivity for cancer detection and reduces the chances of a call back or false positive,” Dr. Marc Inciardi said.
The 3-D mammogram was approved for use in the U.S. in 2011.
