Doctor says stopping E. coli begins in the kitchen

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Doctors say vegetables should be washed thoroughly before you eat them. They also warn that the E. coli virus is more often found in the U.S. in beef products rather than in veggies. With most of the beef coming from commercial slaughter houses, they say the virus can spread like wild fire.

"It's tens of thousands of cattle that go into millions of pounds of hamburger that all gets divided into patties and then that's where the problem lies," says Dir. of Biological Research at UMKC Lawrence A. Dreyfus, Ph.D. "It only takes one sick cow to contaminate the entire lot."

E. coli strains are usually destroyed if you cook the meat or vegetable.
