KU Medical Center performs 1,000th liver transplant

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - For the first time in the state of Kansas, a hospital has passed the milestone of 1,000 liver transplants.

On Wednesday, surgeons with the University of Kansas Hospital performed their 1,000th procedure.

Sixty-year-old Brenda Higgins of Kansas City received the transplant.

Doctors are excited about the accomplishment, but credit the donors for making a difference.

"The most important thing is that patients are only provided the opportunity to get a transplant if they have a donor," Medical Director Richard Gilroy said.

The liver program at KU Med began in 1990. It's now among the top 25 programs by volume nationally.
