Prairie Village mother tries to fight all the odds against meningococcal meningitis

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kansas - A Prairie Village mother tries to fight all the odds against a deadly disease.

Four years ago, at age 37, Maggi Pivovar contracted a bacterial illness called meningococcal meningitis.

Doctors said the mother of four had only a two percent chance to live.

Luckily, she survived the disease but lost both of her legs below both knees.

Pivovar is now on a mission to become an advocate for other victims. She founded the non-profit organization called Maggi's Foundation which will have benefit walk his weekend called "Maggi's Walk."

The walk helps provide education to others about meningitis.

"The more survivors I met, the more inspired I became. To think that maybe there's something I can do to make a difference," said Pivovar.

"Maggi's Walk" starts Sunday morning at 8 a.m. at Zona Rosa . The event includes a 5K or 1K walk or jog.
