Strong start to flu season prompts alert from Kansas health officials

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A strong start to this year's flu season has prompted health officials in Kansas to declare a flu outbreak.

A Minute Clinic in Overland Park and other urgent care centers and hospitals in Kansas have been flooded with people complaining of fever, chills and serious muscle aches.

"Yes, it's been going around my school lately," said flu patient Kate O'Keefe. "Everyone in math class the other day was coughing and sneezing. It was like Children's Mercy in there."

Health experts said there is still time to get a flu shot because the season officially runs through March.

They said hand washing and covering your mouth while coughing are still effective ways to prevent the flu from spreading.
