Valentine's Day Kidney: Forget chocolate or roses, she gave him the gift of life

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Hopefully Travis Spire-Sweet and Taesha Benson aren't keeping score when it comes to Valentine's Day gifts, because Taesha's gift to her boyfriend will be pretty hard to beat.

Travis has spent more than a year on the donor's list for a kidney. He was born with chronic kidney problems and wasn't expected to live past his first birthday.

But Taesha turned out to be a perfect match – a 1 in 30,000 chance -  and donated her left kidney to her boyfriend. A transplant was performed last week at the University of Kansas Hospital and both are home recovering from the procedures.

"Initially you think, ‘How could I do that? I don't have it in me,'" Taesha said. "But over time I got to know Travis and his love of life. Not many people come along who have his integrity, character, and optimism. Travis just happens to be my boyfriend. He has provided me with a new love of life."

Feb. 14 marks an important date for the couple, who have been dating about 10 months, because it is not only Valentine's Day, but also National Donor Day, established in 1998 asa a time to raise awareness about th eimportance of organ and tissue donation.
