Video released shows moments before deadly crash

PLATTE COUNTY, Mo. - The Kansas City Police Department has released helicopter video of a deadly high speed pursuit in Platte County.

It happened on July 2nd along I-29. Platte County Sheriff’s Deputies were chasing Justin Burkholder, 35, after they said he stole a red pickup truck along with several guns including pistols, a long rifle and a shot gun.

Burkholder eluded police and lead them on a 40-minute chase according to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office.

Kansas City Police assisted in the chase. Their helicopter arrived on the scene just minutes before the deadly crash. The video shows Burkholder going the wrong way down I-29 before he crashes into another car.

Benjamin Shively, 38, was the other driver. The father of four was critically injured in the crash but is expected to survive.

Burkholder died at the scene. He had a felony probation violation warrant out of Wyandotte County and three failure to appear warrants out of North Kansas City. His Missouri Driver’s license was also suspended.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into the pursuit to see if proper policy was followed by deputies involved in the chase.
