Kansas City police are investigating an attempted robbery and attack on a 73-year-old great-grandmother.

Beverly Petitt tells 41 Action News she was sitting inside her Kansas City, Missouri apartment Sunday morning, when all of the sudden a man came in and attacked her. She said he covered her face with a towel, that was laying on her floor, and pulled tight across her mouth and throat.

"He crossed it in the back so he could draw it real tight. I can't breathe, I'm grasping for breathe and 'I'm like who are you? Who are you?'," she said. "I felt like I was going to choke."

Petitt told police the man told her to "shut up" and asked for her cash and credit cards. But he left her apartment empty-handed and left his sunglasses behind.

"I got up and started pointing at him, I said 'don't forget I know what you look like. I know what you look like.' I wanted to make sure he knew. All of the sudden, he said 'I think I got the wrong apartment' and he took off running," said Pettit.

The great-grandmother of three left her front door ajar.

She said because most of her apartment building is made up of seniors who are older than her, she usually keeps the door open so neighbors can come by and ask for a ride.

Now, she is changing her ways. And hopes her attacker will be caught.

"I have something to live for and this son of a **** isn't going to get me down," she said. "I don't know how long it is going to take me to get over it but I will."
