Help is on the way to the Sunflower State to help fight homelessness.

$1.49 million has been awarded to 10 communities in Kansas. It's called the Tenant Based Rental Assistance Grant. $80,000 of that is going to the Wyandotte Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

"There's literally hundreds of thousands of people in our community who have mental illness every day and go to work and get up and do their job, and go home," Sherrie Watkins-Alvey of the Wyandotte Center told 41 Action News. "But this client population can't do that."

Adults with severe disabilities and ex felons re-entering society are those who will benefit. It will help subsidize housing for up to two years for recipients.

"The need is so vast and the resources are so small," said Watkins-Alvey.

But every little bit helps and those tasked with helping say it's beneficial to all of us if the help comes on the front end.

"It costs us a whole lot more to leave them on the streets. The cost of involvement with law enforcement, first responders," said Watkins-Alvey.
