Abandoned cars towed to Arrowhead Stadium

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - When the Missouri Department of Transportation ran out of space to store cars towed during and after Thursday's storm, they turned to the biggest parking lot they could find: Arrowhead Stadium.

Roughly a dozen cars were parked overnight in section B2 of the stadium lot, with drivers trickling in throughout the morning to reclaim their abandoned vehicles.

"I was doing good until this older lady jumped in front of me, and I didn't want to smash on the brakes," explained Malisha Garner, who was forced to abandon her car on the side of the road on Thursday afternoon. "I didn't see the pile, so I turned and hit the pile, then the city came and dug me even deeper."

A transit official on site told 41 Action News those looking to reclaim their cars from city lots should call the city first to determine where their car was towed, and come prepared with proof of ownership documents.

There was no fee to pick up a towed vehicle, but the official said the city would likely send an invoice later to recoup the cost of the towing. The lot at Arrowhead and the adjacent maintenance facility will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
