ATF: Homemade fireworks were likely cause of house explosion

5 people injured, 1 remains in critical condition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - UPDATE, 6/10 9:45 p.m.:

ATF Spokesman John Ham says Wiley Mitchell, the homeowner that was critically injured in the explosion, died around noon on Tuesday from his injuries.

Somebody in the home that exploded on Wednesday and injured five people was making homemade fireworks, according to investigators.

The cause came from investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, Friday afternoon. There has been no decision on if charges will be filed in the case.

The house at 9115 Tennessee Avenue on the southeast side of KCMO initially exploded shortly before 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Five people were injured, including one man who remains in critical condition in an area hospital. Two women and two children were also in the home and injured, but they have since been released from the hospital.
