February 4 was an awesome experience for high school girls in the Awesome Ambitions program in Kansas City.

Awesome Ambitions girls had the experience of a lifetime getting hands-on experience finding out what it’s like to be a medical student.

Adrian Clark, the associate provost at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, started the Medical Student for a Day program.

“You are awesome and you deserve success,” Clark explained.

More than 35 KCU medical students volunteered throughout the day demonstrating procedures and techniques and explaining parts of the human body. They also talked with the girls about why they chose careers in medicine and how they plan to make a difference by helping people.

Awesome girls were placed in small groups and used stethoscopes on mannequin patients wired to have a heart-beat, blinking eyes and breathe.  A medical student in another room was the mannequin’s voice responding to questions posed by Awesome girls asking the patient questions to determine cause of illness and decide how possible treatment.

Some of the girls explained it was their first time using a stethoscope and they were glad for the experience because they planned to be nurses.

Kansas City University, the Scripps Howard Foundation, and RideKC sponsored the event.

Awesome Ambitions is celebrating 20 years of helping high school girls in the Kansas City area discover what they want to do in life and begin taking steps to achieve their dreams.

CiCi Rojas, named one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Kansas City, is on video saluting her mother and thanking Awesome Ambitions for helping build young girls into strong successful women.

Also, save the date and plan now to attend the purse fashion show, auction and luncheon for Awesome Ambitions called, Awesome Purse-onality on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at KCPL, 1200 Main Street in Kansas City, Missouri.
