CASA SuperHero 5K Run raises money for kids in foster & court system

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Children met adults dressed as their favorite super heroes at the first CASA Superhero 5K Run/Walk.

The money raised will go to Jackson County, Johnson & Wyandotte Counties CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, which help neglected and abused children who are in the foster care and court system.

“We provide volunteers who work directly with the child to make sure the child’s needs are taken care of and their voices are heard,” Lois Rice, CASA Executive Director, said. “They need things like medical, educational, behavioral therapy. The volunteers make sure the judge gets that information so that the children can have the best possible outcome.”

Last year, CASA served more than 1,500 children.

Rice said there are more than 4,000 children in the foster care system in the Johnson, Jackson and Wyandotte County communities.

Nearly 1,000 people participated in the run.
