Child abuse more costly than major diseases

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A recent Centers for Disease Control report says the economic costs of child abuse and neglect rival those of major health problems.

It found that in 2010 the cost to treat each child who survives abuse or neglect is $210,000. The lifetime cost of someone with Type 2 diabetes ranges from $181,000 $253,00.

Court-appointed special advocates, or CASA, represent those children and fight for their best interest.
Every dollar spent at CASA saves the courts and foster care system $23.

"It's very easy for the affluent in our community, for the taxpayers to not see the hidden poverty of poor children, of abused children and of neglected children," said Martha Gershun, executive director of Jackson County CASA.

Jackson County CASA is looking for more volunteers.
