LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - A young girl was shot and killed Friday evening following a high-speed chase, according to Leavenworth police.
Five-year-old Cady Harris was abducted from an unknown area early Friday evening, said Leavenworth Police Chief Patrick Kitchens during a news conference on Saturday. The chase began in Atchison County, Kan., before briefly crossing into Missouri, then back across the state line and eventually ending in a construction zone at about 7:15 p.m. in Leavenworth.
The chase ended near 20th Street and Metropolitan. Once stuck in the construction zone, Kitchens says the suspect began exchanging gunfire with police. Sometime during the gunfire, Kitchens said, the suspect was struck and wounded.
Authorities said bullets fired by police did not hit the suspect's car or kill Cady.
The suspect, whom family members identified as Marcus McGowan, was transported to a Kansas City area hospital in serious but stable condition. The suspect also remains under police guard.
No officers were injured, and police remained on the scene Friday night as part of their investigation.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation were on the scene Saturday afternoon collecting evidence. They said they expected to wrap up Saturday evening.
Officers who were involved in the shootout have been suspended with pay while the KBI conducts its investigation, which is standard procedure.
