Children build a 'Box City' for library display

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kids at Coyita Miller's summer class are thinking outside the box and creating an entire city made out of just that: boxes.

The City of Kansas City's ‘Active Living KC' initiative partners with a class of fourth graders teaching them about city planning, design and architecture. After a week, the students will create a "Box City" display for the Blue Ridge Branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library.

John Martoni, a former urban planner turned third grade teacher, created the Metropolis: A Green City of Your Own curriculum that the project is based on. Martoni uses various subjects to teach students to be able to recognize community problems and how to create positive solutions.

The Active Living KC initiative is intended to promote active lifestyle.

Their ‘Box City' will go on display beginning Monday, July 2.
