Clay Co. investigating dead body in car, car description matches that of missing 20-year-old's

CLAY COUNTY, Mo. - The Clay County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a body was found inside a car in a pond Sunday.

A spokesman with the sheriff's office says a couple walking Sunday evening near a pond near the intersection of NE 100th Street and Missouri Highway H spotted a car upside down in the pond and called sheriff's deputies.

When deputies inspected the car, they located a dead body inside.

Clay County Sheriff's deputies brought in the Jackson County Medical Examiner's office to assist in identifying the body.

There has not been an identification of the body, but the sheriff's department says the car found is similar in description to the car belonging to missing 20-year-old Robert Walter.

On Monday night, the Facebook page "Help Bring Robert Home," posted the following statement:

"It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that Robert's body has been found. It appears as though he had been in a horrible car accident and was found submerged in a pond. We appreciate all of your efforts, support and prayers. We will keep you up to date with information regarding service arrangements. We ask at this time that you allow the family time to grieve and find understanding in this tragedy.

Robert was an adventurous spirit and loved by many. He is gone, but never forgotten. His legacy will live on through his friends and the work they will do for his favorite cause; gay rights."

No cause of death has been officially announced.
