College students are back on campus working hard but so are thieves trying to steal their identity.

"College students have limited credit profiles and rarely, do they think to check their credit," said Jeffery Heppler, who works at Kansas University's Student Money Management Services.

Here are some actions students can take to not become vulnerable to identity theft.

  • Don't do any personal banking on the schools public Wi-Fi
  • When in your dorm room make sure there's no personal paperwork laying around
  • Check your credit report
  • Look for unusual mail
  • Never give out your  social security number
