KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police said what was likely an after party in downtown Kansas City turned into a crime scene Sunday morning.

Around 6:20 a.m., gunfire went off inside of Stanford's Comedy Club near 8th and Walnut Street.

Investigators believe at least three people were shot inside the club.  Only two of them showed up at hospitals; both had life-threatening injuries.

“I heard a man and a woman screaming at each other. So I could tell they were arguing. Very high pitched voices. Then it got quiet," said Linda Sabo, who was staying at a hotel nearby. "When I heard the sirens I truly associate that screaming to whatever happened next."

An officer said when he arrived, a second round of gunfire when off.

Police said the two shooting victims are men, ages 26 and 36.  It was the 26-year-old's birthday Saturday night, and he was shot twice.

A police sergeant said the club's manager said it should've been closed and no one should have been there.

They spoke to three witnesses at the scene who said they hit the floor when the shooting started.

Sabo explained that's been a drill they run at her daughter's high school in Lincolne, Nebraska.

"I didn't have to do that growing up. We just had drills for tornados," said Sabo.

Police will go through security footage from a city camera to see if they can find who is responsible.

"We are facing violence we have never seen before, and we've never understood before. We need help with that. We're not big enough for this problem," said Margaret Wall, who was also staying at the nearby hotel.

Wall hopes whoever was involved in the shooting will seek help for their sake and the community's.
