Crews continued a series of test welds Thursday for the downtown streetcar. Workers welded along Walnut Street, fusing pieces of rail together to create 312-foot pieces.
When completed, more than 800 tons of steel rail will make up the first phase of the streetcar line.
“The middle part where all the action is happening is where you can see the sparks,” Meghan Jansen with the KC Streetcar Constructors said. “That’s about 2,000 degrees right there before they press the two beams together. It’s very hot and definitely dangerous work but these folks know what they’re doing.”
The streetcar authority also picked out colors for the interior and the outside of the car. The interior seats are blue and the outside of the cars are white.
