1 dead in house fire near US 71 Highway in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A young father died and three other people were injured early Monday in a house fire near US 71 Highway in Kansas City, Mo.

The fire was reported a little before 5:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of E. 54th Street, just east of the highway. The first firefighters on scene reported heavy smoke and flames showing from the home.

The victim has been positively identified as 31-year-old Terrance Mosley, Jr. His two small children, ages 9 and 4 were among those inside the house when the fire started, but they were not injured, family members tell 41 Action News.

Solomon Essex III, a cousin of Mosley's, said his family is grieving.
"When you lose a loved one, it's extremely hard and through the grace of God and the strength of God we are going to be able to pull through this. We will get through this but right now it's a trying time and it's tough," he said.

Kansas City Fire Chief James Garrett said one of the other people who were injured was seriously hurt.

The other victims' injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to burns, authorities said.

Fire investigators say the house did not have a working smoke detector.
