KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Investigators from the Kansas City Police Department have think a detached tire may caused an SUV with several children inside to roll over on westbound Interstate 435 on Wednesday afternoon.
On Thursday, Kansas City Police said a 31-year-old female driver from Kansas City lost control of the SUV near I-435 and 103rd Street and rolled off of the shoulder. The left tire was separated from the wheel axle.
The Ford Explorer SUV was transporting seven children at the time of the accident, ages ranging from one to ten.
"There were like popping noises in the back and then the car like turned and then we went round and round in circles and that's all," 8-year-old India Paige said.
The children were taken to Children's Mercy Hospital, where three were treated for serious injuries and four were treated for minor injuries. First responders took an adult passenger to Overland Park Regional to be treated for a collapsed lung.
The accident limited traffic movement on westbound I-435 to one lane, the left lane, and officers did not give the all-clear until around 8 p.m. Wednesday.
