Expecting parents shovel their way to a baby boy

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The snow stopped many things on Thursday, but it couldn't keep one Kansas City, Kan., baby from arriving into the world.

The Tapia family joked all day that Thursday was going to be the day their son would be born because of all the snow. But the humor faded pretty quickly around 10 p.m.

Adriana started going into labor -- and her husband, Guillermo, started shoveling the driveway. He got 45 minutes into shoveling when he went back inside to check on his wife.

"I come back in and say 'how are you doing? You okay?' She's like 'I'm ready are you ready?' And I said 'no,'" Guillermo said.

He kept shoveling for another 10 minutes until they had to call 911.

"It was funny when I saw his face because he was like, 'honey I can't do it,'" Adriana said with a laugh.

An ambulance arrived, and Guillermo helped the crew carry her out to the street -- the emergency workers couldn't get that close to the house because of all the snow. The family finally got to the KU Medical Center around 2 a.m. Friday.

"At that moment it wasn't funny, but now it's funny. I remember some things, and it is funny," Adriana said.

Guillermo Jr. was born at 8 a.m. Mother and son plan to leave the hospital sometime this weekend.
