Thousands said their final goodbyes to coach Eric Driskell at the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood.

The celebration of life service for the 43-year-old father of two included lots of pictures and heartfelt messages from his pastor and several family members.

Hank Driskell, Eric's nephew, carried a football helmet on stage and told attendees that his uncle was so much more than football.

"He gave himself to everyone that he knew." said Driskell. "I had 27 years with the absolute best guy I've ever known and now I'm sad for the people and the kids who won't get that opportunity."

However, the most touching and surprising greeting came from Eric's wife, Kari Driskell.

She fought back tears as she shared funny, heartwarming stories about the love of her life.

"Thank you for wearing black and gold. I find it very comforting. Eric had other clothes, but he didn't wear them." Kari Driskell said.

Bursts of laughter and tears could be seen in the sanctuary during the funeral service that lasted about an hour.

Driskell became head coach of the Blue Valley football program in 2010. He won the Kansas Class 5A state championship in his first season. He also won a championship as a player in 1991.
