Fear of gunfire forces students to be held after school at Scott Elementary in Belton

BELTON, Mo. - Reports of possible gunfire outside a Belton elementary school kept students inside at the end of the school day.

A statement on the school district's website states the report of gunshots came from a neighborhood around Scott Elementary School, 310 South Scott.

The district's central office took a phone call about the incident about 3:30 p.m.

Police searched the area while students stayed inside the school.

Officers reported the area safe and school was dismissed.

School is not in session Thursday or Friday in the Belton School District.
