As people driving by ran across I-435 to help save complete strangers Monday afternoon, Enoma Ighedosa started shooting video.
He captured the moment one person was rescued by Good Samaritans.
Moments later, emergency responders arrived to take over and knock down the fire.
“Anytime you have a vehicle fire you have the challenge of being on the roadway right? With traffic and some of the hazards around there,” said Jason Rhodes from the Overland Park Fire Department.
Rhodes says the construction added to the challenge.
"It occurred in a lane that was separated by jersey barriers on both sides and then that lane was separated by additional lanes on both sides so it was a very remote location, difficult to get to," said Rhodes.
Without a hydrant in the middle of the highway, water had to be brought in.
"We had to work with tank water which means what you’ve got goes pretty quick in a significant fire so we had to have a lot of apparatus there to shuttle things through," said Rhodes.
He says the Good Samaritans took a great risk jumping in to help.
"I think everyone’s got that innate drive to help someone in need," said Rhodes.
He says he’s sure the families of those involved are very grateful for that risk.
“We would never ask that of a citizen who is not trained and not equipped to do that to put themselves in harm’s way, but if you are the person in need and they come to your aid, I’m sure you are very thankful,” said Rhodes.
The Overland Park Police Department is leading the investigation. They say given the nature of the crash, it may take several days to find out who, if anyone, is at fault.
