KANSAS CITY, Mo. - First lady Mary Ayen Mayardit landed in Kansas City Saturday morning to a crowd of excited members of Kansas City's Sudanese community. She came directly after a trip to New York where she attended the Global First Ladies Alliance.
She came to visit members of the Sudanese community in Kansas City. Awuan Ater says there are three to five thousand Sudanese in the area. He has made a home in Kansas City for 15 years and was there to welcome the first lady at the airport.
"We'll be having a party for her, we'll talk with her. She will meet most of the people that she did not get to for a long time here," he said. "We are real excited having her with us."
South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in July 2011.
