KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A Kansas City couple has now been charged after a 6-year-old boy was found locked outside of his home.
Jackson Co. Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker 39-year-old Daniel S. Greenfield and 34-year-old Melanie Y. Davis, both with four counts of abuse or neglect of a child, and one misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child.
Three young girls who lived across the street heard someone outside their window. They explained how they found the boy, "there was a little boy on the porch crying. Then we put our stuff on and looked out the window and made sure he was still out there. We stayed here until the people left to make sure he was ok."
The girls called police to the home near East 33rd and South Benton around 9 p.m. Sunda.
They said the 6-year-old looked like he had been outside for a while.
One girl, Mi'tiai said, "He had frost bites; his nose was real runny."
The girls said the family wouldn't let the young child in, so they waited until police came to help.
"Not until the police started banging on the door. They were in the window until the police came and then they finally opened up the door," said a neighbor Lakaya.
According to charging documents, the boy told witnesses that his parents had "put him out of the residence." However, Greenfield and Davis told police they thought the child was inside.
Police found the home to be in unacceptable conditions: with little heat, the strong smell of urine, and leaking water throughout the home.
Four other children were living in the home. All five have been taken into protective custody.
