KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City mother says a former Kansas City councilman assaulted her 10-year-old at his school, and she wants to know why the principal allowed it.

Kinda Collins says she was called to Success Academy at Knotts on October 10th after her son Gregory Gaddy, III had an episode. While on the phone with an administrator, she could hear her son screaming in the background.

"It wasn't just a normal cry. He was screaming out in pain," said Collins.

Collins arrived at the principal's office to find her son sitting in a corner in the fetal position. He had tears streaming down his face and his clothes were disheveled.

"Mr. [Michael] Brooks asked him to sit down. He told him no. He tried to go back under the table, he was screaming. Mr. Brooks grabbed him by the neck and slammed him down in a chair." said Collins.

Michael Brooks resigned his council position with the city of Kansas City in 2015, after being accused of choking his assistant. A few months later, the council awarded the assistant $225,000 to settle the hostile work environment complaint.

Brooks, who is also a pastor at Zion Grove Baptist Church, has consistently denied choking his assistant has not responded to our request for an interview.

Collins said she has tried to get Gregory into area charter schools. Four have denied her application, saying they cannot properly support Gregory's developmental needs. KCPS has offered to transfer Gregory to another school, but Collins wants assurance that he soon will not have any interactions with Brooks.

"I don't want him interacting with nobody's baby, not just my baby, nobody's baby. He has an anger issue," said Collins.

KCPS says they are investigating Collins' claims and why Brooks was inside the school.
