Funeral services set for local veteran, Sgt. Issac Sims, killed in police standoff

Funeral arrangements have been set for a U.S. Army veteran killed in a police standoff last month .

Sgt. Issac Sims will be laid to rest on Thursday, June 5, at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. The burial follows a service scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Heartland Cremation & Burial Society at 6113 Blue Ridge Blvd. in Raytown.

Sims got into a fight with his father on May 25, and police were called when Sims fired gunshots. SWAT officers eventually shot and killed Sims.

During one of his two tours in Iraq, Sims was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and eventually discharged. Sims' family said he had sought treatment from the Veterans Affairs Hospital two days before he was killed.

The VA hospital pledged to costs to bury Sims .
