Hallmark tweaks ‘Deck the Halls' lyric, replaces ‘gay'

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Possibly one of the most well-known holiday songs has been tweaked by Hallmark.

The company changed the words in the "Deck the Halls," song from "Don we now our gay apparel," to "fun apparel," when using it for a holiday ornament.

According to a news release from Hallmark Spokeswoman Kristin Ernsting, the lyric was changed to play up the ornament's, which features a Christmas sweater, "fun" spirit.

"When the lyrics to ‘Deck the Halls' were translated from Gaelic and published in English back in the 1800s, the word ‘gay' meant festive or merry. Today it has multiple meanings, which we thought could leave our intent open to misinterpretation," Ernsting said.
