Homeowner shot in Lee's Summit home invasion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Lee's Summit Police are looking for three people who they said broke into a home overnight.

The trio broke into a home in the 5600 block of NE Oaks Ridge Lane just before 4 a.m. Sunday. Police said the homeowner heard the suspects and confronted them. During a struggle, the homeowner was shot in the leg.

JoAnn Martinez lives across the street from the house. She woke to the sound of gunfire this morning.

"It was about 4 and I heard gunshots; and it shocked me, originally I thought it was a thunderstorm," Martinez said.

Martinez describes her neighborhood and child friendly. She believes what happened Sunday morning was an isolated incident, but plans to double check her alarm at night.

"I don't think that it's something that's going to happen all the time. But, with that said, I'm going to be pretty diligent about setting my alarm every night," Martinez shared.

The victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The suspects fled.
