The thought of people diagnosed with a mental illness buying a gun has people up in arms.

The debate comes on the heels of a decision by the House of Representatives to strike down a regulation preventing some mentally ill from buy a gun.

"Mentally incompetent people should not have guns but these varies levels of mental incompetency," said Kevin Jamison.

Kevin Jamison is an attorney and president of the Western Missouri Shooters Alliance. He is in favor of the house repealing the regulation instated under the Obama administration.

The regulation would have applied to people receiving social security disability and are unable to manage their own finances because of mental illness.

"This was one of the many administrative orders done in the last six months to put a great numbers of people into the national instant checks system without due process of law and that's not a road we want to start going down,” said Jamison.

41 Action News reached out to several groups and activist against gun violence, who say they were not familiar enough to comment on the regulation.

However, Americans for Responsible Solutions issued this statement saying the House weakened the background check system and made communities less safe.

Gun advocates feel the rule was one more regulation overstepping second amendment rights.

That is going a step too far it denies people do process of law,” said Jamison.
