How to know if your used car has an open recall

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - As the number vehicles with recalls soars into the millions, the chance of buying a car that has an unfixed recall has never been greater.

CarFax estimates one in four used cars listed online in Missouri has an open recall, which is more than double the state average of one in nine. The company offers a free online recall check based on your car's manufacturer and your VIN.

In Kansas and Missouri alone, there were 250,000 cars with open recalls listed online last year.

Sorting through the different recalls and keeping track of work done by previous owners can make it challenging to know for sure if a car is recall free.

Representatives from CarFax say using the car's 17-digit VIN to run the vehicle's history is the only way to know for sure if a car has a recall and if it has been fixed.
