A hot stretch, like we’re in right now, can be a shock to the system, for humans and plants alike. The extreme heat can stress out your flowers, trees, plants and grass.

So, how does a beautiful place like the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens on 179th Street keep things looking so lush and healthy?

Horticulturist Anne Wildeboor has the answers:

First, like with people, HYDRATE!

Let those not-so-still waters run deep! Dig a little hole next to the plant, for example, to make sure the soil is wet all the way down to the roots.

As with much of life, timing is everything. Water early in the morning or after sunset. That way the water goes where it’s needed rather than escaping into the not-so-thin air.

In addition to keeping things juicy, believe the labels! If a plant says it thrives in a shaded area, believe it and locate your plants accordingly.

Now, with people like Wildeboor around, the Arboretum thrives. But, it may also be because this place is, well, enchanted!

The Enchanted Forest is open, included in daily admission prices, through September 4.

However, Saturday, July 22 is especially enchanting. The Enchanted Faire starts at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and runs through 7:00 p.m.

There will be treats and entertainment, including children doing their own Shakespeare performances.

You can bring your own water, lawn chairs, maybe a picnic lunch. And don't forget bug spray.

They encourage you and your children to wear your best enchanted costume.

Oh, and keep an eye out for gnomes. They have homes out there in the forest. And, of course, there’s no place like gnome.
